:: Scouting Your Fields

During the production season, producers and agricultural professionals are encouraged to scout their fields for soybean rust. Scouting your fields for soybean rust could be a very time consuming process without assistance on when to intensity your scouting efforts. Monitoring efforts with the sentinel plot system being coordinated by the USDA and Extension Specialists funded through the North Central Soybean Research Program and the United Soybean Board will greatly assist everyone in knowing when to intensify scouting. In addition, forecasting efforts available on-line through the North American Plant Disease Forecast Center will also assist in guiding scouting efforts.

Scouting will be critical to determine when and what type of a fungicide application to make when there is an imminent threat of rust in the area. If rust is found in the field, it is recommended that a triazole fungicide or premix containing a triazole be used. If no rust is found in the field and a preventative application is being made, strobilurin products or chlorothalonil could be used as well as triazoles and premixes. The spread of soybean rust will be monitored throughout the season and current conditions can be viewed at the USDA soybean rust web site..

Scouting efforts should focus on the lower to mid soybean crop canopy, targeting the following agreas of a field. Most selection criteria are based on areas of the field which will stay wet (leaf wetness) for longer periods of time.

Focused Scouting Criteria for Soybean Rust:

  • North sides of windbreaks
  • Portions of the field where planting overlaps occur (end rows)
  • Early planted fields in the area
  • Early maturing / shorter season varieties
  • Low lying areas of the field
  • Areas close to water ways
